It’s now been two months since my visit to Bangalore and working with CMCA via Common Purpose. It was an experience that’ll stay with me for life. This was my first insight into the not-for-profit sector and after years of hearing about NGOs and the work that they do, I was finally able to experience it for myself first-hand.
Upon arrival at CMCA’s headquarters based in Bangalore, we were immediately greeted with warmth and enthusiasm. The hospitality, offering of food, and sound of cheerful laughter was a clear indicator of what was to come and it’s safe to say I wasn’t disappointed. Creating resources such as activity cards for children, engaging in Magic Box sessions, and discussing social media marketing and alumni networks were just a few of the things we did during our time with CMCA.
The highlight of my internship were the school visits, where we accompanied CMCA’s Educators to schools and carried out interactive sessions with the children. It was wonderful to see the children be so engaged and knowledgeable about their country’s issues. They were so enthusiastic and eager to learn, it was lovely to witness. Being able to watch them practice for their Independence Day performance was also a standout moment for me.
CMCA’s work ethic and firm belief that youth can make a lasting impact in the country was a driving factor throughout my time with them. Seeing the change that they’ve already been able to make definitely piqued my interest in participating in voluntary and non-profit work and encouraged me to volunteer as a sighted guide for visually impaired people upon returning to the UK.
I’d like to thank the entire team at CMCA for offering me such a gratifying experience and I look forward to continuing to use my knowledge acquired whilst with them to hopefully take part in more voluntary work in the future.
